For some reason it says we are both are offline mode and we can't figure out how to go online to invite each other to custom zombies anymore

The offline text you see is what the WAW profile system says. Plutonium completely removed this outdated and annoying system so the text is false. You cannot be offline even if you wanted to.
The only things you need to know is what our custom games doc explains. Ignore that offline text. You are online
