How do we play with friends in the new Plutonium update

So normally with plutonium we were supposed to use Port Forwarding and all that to connect with each other, but in the new update you can see a friends list in the right hand side of the screen before starting up your game of choice. How do we add friends onto there? Is it just connected to who we are following here on the forum?

No. You still use the same guide as before.
