Do "private game" lobbies work?

my friend and i tried joining each other using the Private Game lobby for Zombies mode and it gave us both an error of something like "no game sessions were found" like it was an error for searching for matchmake lobbies.
Is there something we are doing wrong or do these private lobbies not work and we require to set up our own server?
