Is this legal?

totallybummie If you own the game then that's fine as Android says it will skip those files and just installs the client, but why would you try it out if you didn't own it? If you ask me the intension is to get the game for free and this can be done by exploiting the installer's repair feature.

We plan to stop serving the files for that very reason
You mean people will have to own the game on Steam in the future?

luigistyle Look in the bright side, at least Activision will have no reason to C&D Plutonium

Yeah, but I thought it fell into a legal gray area or whatever anyway?
-
luigistyle Plutonium is a client that supports both BO2 and MW3, the application itself isn't really illegal. However with BO2 (MW3 isn't included as you can get the game files from Steam), the client is packed with the game files, provided by Piry.exe, an unofficial source. At best this is copyright infringement, but I do worry about this when the time comes though. The demand for it will be high, increasing the price of the game in the second hand market (Key sites) and discouraging Activision from decreasing the MSRP of BO2
-
Yeah, it may suck since Activision still sells BO2 at the price of its launch, but this move is to provide the best future for this client, god forbid if a C&D ever comes
-
Vulture Aid Yeah, I was talking about T6. I just mean that staff seem to call the base game abandonware and aren't really worried about any legal issues
-
luigistyle I was just trying to look at Android's perspective honestly, I don't like the sound of it either

I wanted to see if the installer seemed high quality and it was actually worthwhile for me to grab the game while it's on sale. To be completely honest, I was expecting a nice user interface style launcher, but I guess I should have assumed it would be a little less than that due to what I was told about the mod prior to download.
-
totallybummie Well yeah T6 is in a post shutdown state currently. In its last update when Plutonium shut down we removed it's account features and anticheat and then made a bare bones installer piry.exe so people could continue to play without our at the time large backend and forum. A nice gesture tbh.
This served us well until the project increased in popularity, we have since re-released our MW3 client that was totally taken offline when we shutdown due to lack of players at the time. Now we have since done lots of work on MW3 and it even has a GUI launcher. Now we plan to push an update to T6 to intergrate the new launcher, account system and anticheat like how MW3 has but this takes time.
Also I must say I'm not sure what you are expecting, we are not a AAA studio so what's wrong with a functional console style updater for a community project? A GUI is a nice to have but in no means essential, it actually has a really robust network solution behind it that supports caching etc and it also hash checks your game files so it's by no means low quality. Basing your opinions of a client based off it's installer alone seems odd if you ask me. If you feel so strongly about our current lack of a GUI launcher and things you have heard then it's simple. Don't play.
-
This is illegal af, better don't play or the police cops will come knockin'.
Look at the mw3 launcher, can't tell me that looks shitty. Even supports launching bo2, just doesn't have updater functionality for it built in atm. -

I didn't mean anything bad by my comment, but I apologise if it came off that way. I more so wanted to assure that the client wasn't something that looked extra sketchy and wasn't going to give me a virus. Clearly, I was very off base with that. I think the fact that you all have done this crazy amount of work for free is pretty astonishing, which is why it sounded too good to be true. I just like to be a cautious buyer before purchasing the game on steam then not actually getting a decent online experience, you know?
That being said, I am interested in becoming part of the community, despite this rocky start of confusion. You mentioned that Black Ops 2 is lacking the full functionality of its full release, but you are going to be releasing a new patch for it. Would you say it's worth while to invest in black ops 2 currently while the update is not pushed, or is it far off enough that MW3 would be more sensible?
-
totallybummie You can still play BO2 just fine, it's just that MW3 is getting more updates since it's new and favored by the developers. I prefer MW3 in my opinion because the gameplay is better, I still play the zombies though

Thank you.

totallybummie T6 is getting it's update soon, but we can't provide eta's. I'd say Black ops 2 is worth buying as it's on sale on steam when I looked. However you probably will encounter some cheaters sadly, zombies is mostly fine but mp may be hit or miss. I suggest trying out MW3, you can even get the game files for free legally from steam.
-
Yeah, I've never encountered a cheater in ZM but have had my fair share in MP

Well, that's a pleasant surprise! I am still likely going to purchase Blops2 right while on sale for when the T6 update comes, but are you allowed to direct me to how to legally download MW3 from steam for free? EDIT: I figured it out.
-
totallybummie
Yeah, just download the dedicated server. It literally provides the game files except for the executables, which are provided by Pluto anyway. -
luigistyle Yeah, I figured it out like two minutes after I asked lmao
Edit: Just wanted to say that I installed it and the menus do look very professional!
