Unable to find recent players/add friends

I've been attempting to find a way to add my friends within the website and game itself. I've hopped on a few public servers with my friends and still nothing is showing up within that recent players tab. I have them added within my followers list on the website itself.
Nothing has shown progress, I'm wondering if there is any technical issues or things I may be missing in order to play with my friends.

DarkUnicycle "recent players" doesn't work. On the forum you have to follow them but they also have to follow you in return.

Getting fed up of having to scroll through the same posts each visit?
