Trying to play custom game zombies with my brother.

We are trying to play custom games, and we have port forwarded, tried to connect through ip, and everything and it all works and recognizes that its there through the friends list, but when we try to connect it just says "Joining Game Session" at the bottom for around 10 seconds, and then it just disappears and nothing happens.
what do?
