I have been doing a lot of research and some say it is legal, some say it isn't. My question is: Do I need a legit copy of BO2 to use T6? Will I get in trouble if I don't have one?

Well, have you ever owned BO2? If the answer is no then I'd say do your part and support the developers of the original game. However, if you choose not to most likely nothing will come of it. So the decision is a moral decision, your call.
