How can I play with my friends in a private match or in LAN?

Hi there stuff, I am new to Plutonium and wanted to play with my friends in lan, I thought we just connect to the same network and then one of us create a private match and the other goes to the Server Browser>LAN and that's all, but apparently it's not. Then my friend said that he will create a private match and I am gonna click on his name in the friends list, when I did it, it said CONNECTING...... But that took forever and didn't load. So is there a way I can play with my friends offline in LAN?
