Joining public servers with friends

Yesterday my friends joined my lobby for multiplayer and every time I tried putting us into a server together, it displayed an error only to my friends saying "The game session has ended." It still connected me to the server.
We separately found the same servers on the list and played together that way, but is there a workaround for this issue?

I'm pretty sure you can't join servers as a group and rather need to join the same server or maybe join your friend directly once he joined the server
