Error: Unable to Join session

I’ve checked my firewall, antivirus, and repaired files, but for some reason me and my friend cannot play together at all.
We were playing just fine until he had a minor power outage, at which point his game crashed, now it lists him as constantly in a party and will let neither of us join each other’s sessions.

Bumping this thread to say I've got the same issue, but only in one direction. I actually have 2 PCs on my local network, a laptop and a desktop. The desktop PC can join a custom game session hosted by the laptop, but the laptop is unable to join a custom game hosted by the desktop. I get the same "Error: Unable to join session" message as OP gets, but only when the laptop tries to join the desktop PC's session. I have Windows firewall disabled on both PCs, and I have my router setup to port forward to my desktop (though that's not even necessary since we're both on the same local subnet).
Reason why I'm even bothering to look for help is because the desktop PC is much faster than my 10-year-old laptop, and we get pretty bad FPS drops when things get hectic because the old laptop has to host. I don't see any errors in the console when trying to join, just the in-game error message.
