Try exiting Steam completely and make sure gamepad is enabled in the game's settings.
Also try the controller in a game, not in the main menu.Last thing if you're on bluetooth try with a cable.

i have ds4 and plugged in the controller, enabled the pad in settings and still dont recognize the controller. someone have an idea of what can i do?

the problem is that if you run plutonium you don't have steams built in controller emulator cuz plutonium doesnt use steam. the easiest and most brilliant way to fix this is to add plutonium.exe as a non steam game. then you will have steams built in controller emulator as well as a modded client. even i impressed myself when i thought of all of this. this will get your controller working. im using a dualshock 4 rn.
and just as a side note, for future endeavors, you can do this with lots of things that need a controller emulator. for example you can add ubisoft games to your steam to take advantage of the steam controller emulator on ubisoft games.

Such a simple yet genius method. Makes so much sense too like duh. This method probably works with anything that doesn’t recognize your controller. Steam is the goat and so are you brother -
Controller doesn't work in any of the modded clients I use. They did before but suddenly stopped. Will have to try that method of adding the clients to steam

Yeah, this trick actually works great - once you add Plutonium as a non-Steam game, Steam Input handles the controller perfectly. I’m using a DS4 the same way and it fixed everything for me.
