My username used to be "Red". I was super stoked when I was able to get a name like that when I first made this account back around when plutonium started. But due to a really busy schedule and life situations I haven't been on in quite some time. Just logged in today after a little over a year just to find my username automatically changed with absolutely no warning via email or plutonium news in relation to name changes for inactive accounts. I do understand that It does make sense for usernames to be available again to others who are either new, or grant the opportunity for someone else who has invested a lot of time in the community to obtain the name they always wanted from an account that hasn't been active at all.

With all that being said I am disappointed to see my username gone of course, I do think there should be an automatic system in place for emails to be sent to accounts who have been inactive for a good amount of time, to at least warn them that there name will be taken if actions aren't taken after a certain amount of time of inactivity.

InactUsr6903 Accounts with a verified email make it so 2 years if inactivity have to go by... if your account was only inactive for a year and it was claimed, that means you didn't have a verified email account... so there was no way to send you an email address to let you know.

DirkRockface Well thats a shame, I swear I thought I did verify the account right after I made it all those years ago. I assumed that just making my account they'd still be able to email me. Thanks for the information.

          no problem!

Gnewb said in Name automatically changed with no warning.:

I assumed that just making my account they'd still be able to email me

no, that's what the verify step is actually for... makes sure the email address you gave them is actually yours so they know they are contacting the correct person and that you aren't someone just using fake emails.

lots of people skip the verify step... causes a number of issues (mostly related to password resets)... for others reading this thread... verify your email addresses!!!
