Trying to play splitscreen.

I'm trying to play zombies with my brother, and we can't seem to get splitscreen to work. We plugged his controller into the pc, and the "press a for split screen" message you'd normally see never appeared. Is splitscreen not supported on this client, or is there another step we missed?
