Yes, just make sure to start your game in LAN mode: this disables the anti cheat and allows you to experiment without risk if being banned.

I recommend at least reading up to 256 entities minimum this you can do smaller but i like to be safe
I'm pretty sure there can only be up to 24 entities at a time, so you probably don't need to read that many ents.
On another note: were you able to find offsets for bones?
