your issue is not because your steam account is not linked. did you buy that steam account used? if not, then you linked it to another account and just forgot if you did, then it may have been linked before you bought it.
without seeing screenshots of the actual error, it's tough to tell, but you'll like need to make sure you actually have multiplayer installed (and not just the base game).
