Safely hosting a server

How can i guarantee that hosting a server is safe and that everyone else on my network is 100% safe. Looking to host it on my PC. How safe is port forwarding? Not sure how a lot of this works. Just wanna know how safe it is and what people could gain access to if something can happen. Thanks

If you wanna be 100% safe in your home then host on a VPS and not on your own machine.
If you don't then I'd recommending hosting on a VM and, if you can, on a VPN too to avoid DDOS attacks
