Regarding Steam BO2...
-
Black Ops 2 on Steam is still at triple A price despite the game not receiving a major update in almost a decade with an abundance of hackers and severe cybersecurity flaws.
This might sound controversial but is it Steam or Acti's fault that BO2 (or any old cod) has an RCE exploit? I heard from others online that it's Steam's fault because they have a weak api but I also heard it's Acti's fault too because of their negligence

If pluto had to patch it out for them they are both completely at fault
the game still makes sells and allows player to take the risk of playing Online with this being a Known issue Regarding how easy it was to fix I have no idea but id guess it took a bit

Porcelain The difficulty with fixing RCEs and other exploits is actually figuring out they exist not actually fixing them. Activision and Treyarch have been informed about numerous RCEs by hobbyists and didn't bother fixing them despite having access to the source code of T6. Plutonium has a strong focus on security so whenever a previously unknown RCE or other exploit is discovered it will be fixed immediately.

Porcelain Not sure if this is correct but I heard from others. On old cods they don't host dedicated servers. Pretty sure they stopped after modern warfare 3. Most servers on black ops 2 servers are hosted by some random person in the lobby. Which leads to security risk issues. This is why people care about 3rd party clients. They host dedicated servers like iw4x, plutonium, rektT5, etc. It is more secure that way so RCE exploit can't really happen.

Ok I think y'all misunderstood my question. What I want answers to is if...
Steam or Activision is responsible for the security flaws of BO2 (and older cods)
I'm already aware that old cods are a risk to play at their current state

Porcelain T7 has an exploit related to the steam friends api which lets you crash someone's game. But most of the RCEs and exploits are related to the game specifically not Steam. Steam actually patches exploits so even if one was discovered it would quickly be patched.

Why did you post in the modding category lol
Anyways imo Activision is responsible. They should either close the servers or at least put a warning saying they won't fix servers or maybe even recommend Plutonium who did their job idk but just letting old games die with no support and no security fix at all is pretty sad, especially for a company this big
Sadly ""hackers'" ruin everything so yeah they should accept the defeat at some point and say "the game is not safe and it's our responsability to close public servers to make sure everyone is safe"
But that's just my opinion, some would say that they wanna play BO2 online and you cannot close it since it's more than half of the game -
Resxt Interestingly enough Steam BO2 has no offline support other than the campaign mode. Unlike console there isn't an offline mode you can go into which isn't connected to their servers. If Activision shut down the servers for BO2 at some point you wouldn't be able to play the MP or ZM modes at all on PC because of this.
