Can't connect to Friend's custom game over LAN

We've followed all the steps listed in the guides, yet all that happens (whether we attempt via double clicking a friend or console commanding "connect [ip]") is that the joining game session pops up, disappears with no result.
Any ideas on how to fix?

happycamper you are using the built in friends feature of bo2 yes? (Not the F10 menu!). The host can try forwarding port 3074 udp.
