Make sure you both don't have a firewall blocking things (some antivirus do have one, thinking of ESET which is known to do that for example)
Also make sure you both don't have any VPN running (even if Pluto is excluded, turn it off) and make sure you don't have anything like Hamachi running
Also make sure you're both on the same version (r3417)

And last make sure you're both on the same game. Sometimes people try to invite their friends in MP while they're in ZM.
Finally use the game's friend list F while in a lobby to invite him in a lobby/group (you invite since you have an open NAT type)
